Daily Foot Health Program

Overview

The daily foot health program includes two parts. The theory has lessons that lead up to the hands-on workshop where you gain exposure to the daily foot health practices, and highlights the essential role of support personnel as part of an interdisciplinary team, promoting prevention of infection, complication reduction, and improved overall health.

Foot Care Nurse Clinical

Professional Development for RN, RPN, LPN, and NP

This course uses the Canadian Association of Foot Care Nurses’ National Competencies for Advanced Nursing Foot Care in Canada as Clinical Performance Standards and is led by a Foot Care Nurse Educator.

  • Theory course provides a theoretical foundation for nurses preparing for a career in nursing foot care.
  • Clinical course provides in-class and hands-on practical experience working with people from the community providing footcare under the guidance of the Educator.

Anatomy and Human Physiology II - SN200

This course continues the description of the anatomy and physiology of a healthy adult human body that was begun in SN100. The cellular, tissue and organ levels will be studied as they apply to the following organ systems: nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic, immune, digestive, urinary and reproductive. In addition, an examination of fluid, acid/base and electrolyte balance will be undertaken. Aspects of clinical relevance will be included for several systems. The course includes, weekly, three hours of theory in lecture format and three hours of lab activity. Pre-Requisite SN100. This course is part of Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Technology and Trades

Ozone Depletion Prevention - IB802

Canada’s Ozone Layer Protection Awareness Training Program is based on Environment Canada’s “Code of Practice for Elimination of Fluorocarbon Emissions in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems”. This course will deal with environmentally correct equipment design, proper handling of refrigerants, and will prepare participants for complying with provincial regulations covering refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Each attendee will receive the Participant Manual to refer to in class and take home. Participants who achieve a mark of 75% or better on the exam will receive an Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) card. This card must be renewed every five years for those who purchase or handle refrigerants across Canada. Note: this course is strictly theory and does not incorporate hands-on training. Anyone in residential, commercial, industrial, domestic, automotive and mobile cooling applications would benefit from taking this course. This course is offered via distance education where the students and instructor in Thunder Bay are joined by students through Blackboard. Students attend class at home/office through Blackboard.

Do you love taking photos with your phone, digital camera or device but can’t figure out how to capture anything more than simple snapshots? Go from random snapper to top-end photographer as you learn how to use your cellphone and digital camera to the best of its ability. Smartphone, mobile or whatever type of photography you want to call it, it’s clear that taking great pictures with a phone has become a thing now. With the right knowledge and the right techniques, you can use your phone to take photos that are so great that nobody would believe they were taken with a phone! Add some software to the mix, and you’ve got a great recipe for some creative photography no matter what device you use. Make sure to bring your cellphone or digital camera or both. A tripod is also recommended. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather as you will spend time outdoors getting the perfect shot and bring out your creative side.

Build Your Ride (NEW)

Building your own ride can be a fun and rewarding experience where you get to customize your own bike to suit your needs and preferences.

Are you up to the challenge?

Begin by selecting your frame, get to understand the parts, tools, techniques, and little details that go into building your own ride. All frames, parts, and tools will be supplied. Get to know the basic maintenance and repair skills of easy mechanical things you can do to maintain and modify your bike at home.

Test drive your new ride on our college trails and take your new ride home at the end of the week.

If we have more time we may tackle additional DIY projects.

Interactive Media Discovery Week

Have fun exploring the world of Interactive Media Development with digital photography, graphic design, 3D, animation, and game design using industry standard software and equipment! Learn how to take photos for stop motion animation and edit them to create character spritesheets and moving backgrounds for a fun video game design experience. Using digital media design and creation techniques, we will bring your creations to life by designing characters that can walk, jump, duck and run with a beginner level introduction to video game coding using HTML5 and JavaScript. Pack your lunch and join us for a fun-filled week experiencing new ideas in the media arts while making new friends and creating cool Interactive Media experiences.

Make sure to bring your choice of a camera, cell phone or tablet along with your sketch book, pencils, markers, and pencil crayons for colouring.

This introduction to the world of industrial design through woodworking and carpentry will enable youth to develop modern skills safely in our college workshop.

Find out how useful woodworking can be by gaining experience with a large variety of tools and learning the differences between hardwoods and softwoods qualities and uses. Develop dexterity and skills through the planning process, developing organizational skills through the planning stages, and execute hands-on tasks to complete their builds.

Our Bookkeeping program will help you build the foundation of general business practices to effectively set up and maintain accurate record keeping and show you how to handle the daily tasked associated with managing transactions of records for industry, commerce, and government. You will obtain knowledge in various phases of the accounting cycle with the use of theory and specialized computer software.

OL030 Intermediate Accounting I

This course explores the framework of financial accounting and the statements of comprehensive income, financial position, and changes in equity. Students examine intermediate accounting topics with an emphasis on the recognition of assets and revenue recognition. Prerequisite Requirement: OL090 OL 091 or equivalent.

OL075 Taxation II

This course builds on the knowledge base obtained in Taxation 1 to enable students to complete a T1 General Tax Return for individuals earning business, property, and capital income. With this enhanced knowledge students calculate income taxes payable and through situational analysis determine which income tax credits an individual is entitled to deduct from taxes payable. In addition, students obtain a foundational understanding of income earned through a corporation to complete a T2 Corporate Tax Return. With this knowledge students critique the tax planning opportunities of earning income through a corporate entity or as an individual. Prerequisite: OL160 Taxation I Computer Software requirements: Directions on how to access the Profile software will be provided by the facilitator. Note, Profile does not work on MAC products. Students with a MAC will need to manually complete the PDF documents (also provided by the facilitator).

OL076 Payroll Administration

This course covers the following topics: maintaining payroll records; salaried, hourly, commission and contract workers; taxable benefits, statutory and other deductions; preparation of payroll journal entries; preparation of Records of Employment; preparation of T4s and T4 Summary; Workers’ Compensation; Employment Standards; and validate the use of Computerized Payroll systems.

OL090 Accounting Basics I

This course introduces the student to how accounting information is used by and meets the needs of both internal and external users through effective and efficient communication as well as what accounting information is required by a business concern to clearly reflect the operating results of the enterprise over its operating life. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to generally accepted accounting principles, the interpretation and preparation of financial statements and how this information is recorded in the various business records.

OL091 Accounting Basics II

In this second of the two introductory accounting courses, students will expand their understanding of accounting principles and concepts while covering specific topics including: capital assets, corporations’ shareholders’ equity, and bonds payable. Preparation of the Statements of Retained Earnings and Cash flows will also be covered. Finally, the students will expand their understanding of the role of financial statement users by studying financial statement analysis. Prerequisite: OL090 Accounting Basics I or AC111.

OL127 Cost and Managerial Accounting I

This course introduces managerial accounting concepts and terminology including the elements of a job costing system, the application of cost-volume-profit analysis, and the application of job order costing, process costing, and activity-based costing. It is recommended that students have taken OL090 Accounting Basics I prior to this course.

OL160 Taxation I

This is an introductory course to federal income tax in a Canadian setting. Students will gain an understanding of the underlying objectives and principles of income taxation. Topics include employment income, business income, income from property, investment income and capital gains. Personal tax returns for individuals will be completed both manually and using a tax preparation software program. It is recommended that students have knowledge of accounting prior to taking this course (OL090 Accounting Basics I and OL091 Accounting Basics II) Computer Software. Requirements: Microsoft Excel

NOTE: This course is not for MAC users. Please note the tax software used is only available in a Windows PC version at this time.

OL568 Quickbooks Online

Examine the difference between QuickBooks Pro and QuickBooks Online (QBO, a cloud-based accounting software program). Apply key features including tracking and communicating with customers, invoicing, supplier management, profitability analysis, HST management and reporting. Additionally, students will explore 3rd party application integration. Computer Software Requirements: Intuit Canada provides a complimentary 1-year student trial of QuickBooks Online. There is a sign-up process within the course shell and the students will receive an email invitation from the facilitator with further directions. It requires access to the internet and a PC or Mac and is optimized for Chrome primarily. The course work cannot be done on a mobile device.

OL700 Introduction to Computers 1

This course will familiarize students with the digital world by exploring the hardware and software of their computer system. Students will learn to use the most common functions of the Windows operating system including File Explorer for file management, utility programs, various web browsers for social media while observing and identifying security and privacy concerns and issues. Students will learn to build properly formatted documents using Microsoft Word and spreadsheets including correctly functioning formulas using Microsoft Excel and create commanding presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint while using the cloud to store and access their files. Computer Software Requirements: Windows and Microsoft Office 2016, 2019 or 365. MAC users will not be supported in this course.

OL702 Excel - Core

Learn to use Microsoft Excel to create and format spreadsheets in order to analyze data and make more informed business decisions. You will discover how to; create, edit, format, and print workbooks; use mathematical formulas and functions; create and format charts and shapes; insert images; cut, copy and paste data. Computer Software Requirements: Microsoft Excel version 2016, 2019, 2021 or 365. MAC users are not supported in this course.

OL746 Computerized Accounting

This course introduces students to a multi-module accounting software program designed for small to medium-sized businesses. Students will use the software and their knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to create and maintain accounting records, including period-end procedures and the creation of financial statements for sole proprietorships. Formally known as Sage 50 – (Uses Sage 50)

Note: This course uses Sage 50 2021. It is strongly recommended that students take an introduction to accounting course prior to taking this course.

Students will be instructed in the first week of the course on how to install a free student version of the software (obtained through the purchase of the correct textbook). System Requirements • Processor operating at 1.0 GHz or higher (2.0 GHz recommended) • 4GB of RAM (6 GB recommended) • 2 GB hard disk space (additional 1GB needed for installation) • Latest version of Internet Explorer • Microsoft® supported version of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 (with the latest updates from Microsoft) Sage 50 software will not run on a Mac.
